1989 DS

I am "eyeballing" an '89 Club Car DS on Craig's list. It has new Interstate batteries and looks good (in the pictures)..... but I haven't talked to the seller yet. I note this cart has a control system that appears to be just a simple wiper switch (V-Glide Accel Sys) and a set of resistance coils to control the motor (apparently 3 speeds or so). Dwgs I have viewed online also show a speed limiting box. Q: Is this cart a good candidate for motor/controller/solenoid changeout to get more speed? I dnld the owner's manual & the specs say it makes 12 mph max and the motor is only 2 HP. Most carts in my "gated retirement community" run about 15 MPH on the streets; some a little more.....12 MPH just won't cut it for me, but I just personally prefer the older styling to the new/faster "jelly bean" styles. Your opinion(s) greatly appreciated ..... before I take on this project (and spend a buncha' bucks. :^) Thanks in advance. Ed S, in TX

A resistor cart will cost at least $600 for a controller conversion.
The Club Car DS has been the same body style from 1982 to present.
My preference would be to get a controller cart. The 48v Club Car with a stock controller and a stock 36v motor is capable of 25mph without any serious upgrades.
My personal preference would be an E-Z-GO TXT from 1995-2009. If you are just using it around the neighborhood, the stock PDS cart will do 18mph with a $5 speed chip.

Thanks, Doug. Sounds like a resistor-type cart would not be a real good choice. Reckon I will just keep lookin' for a while.......at "controller" carts, that is. Ed S.
