1987 Marathon keeps Quiting on me

I have a 1987 36V marathon. I fully charged it up. It will run almost all the way around the block but then will start losing power till it comes to a complete stop. It wont go fowards or backwards, It's completly Dead. But you wait about 5 mins and it will go again then starts losing power again. Anybody got any idea what may be wrong. This is my first cart and I know nothing about electric carts. ........ Thanks

first thing to do is check each battery individualy so that you know all are good one battery being low in voltage could contribute to this problem.
