8-8volt

I picked up a 04 Carry All 2, from a local College Maintenace dept yesterday. it has 8, 8V batteries. The motor states 48 volts. The alum battery supports are broken, will fix today. It appears to have been functioning on 64 volts, how is that posable? The batteries are dead, plates are visible...
